FURNITURE REPAIR/ COMMISSIONED WORK

Discarded wooden furniture in Australia according to All Gone Rubbish Removals, is estimated at 50 000 tonnes each year! Keep that in mind when you try to get your head around 85% of cheap new and flat packed furniture being a major part of that equation!

Plane and Chisel Tasmania designs and builds custom furniture on commission. It is all hand built to “forever” standards but what’s really exciting is being planet friendly. Our philosophy is simple enough; waste, our attitudes, our attention, and our concern, are important, however small the difference we can make.

Our furniture is hand-built but and (1), reduces landfill by salvage and rescue. The pieces are built using (in part or in whole as co-designed with the customer) salvaged and rescued timbers from old furniture, builders scraps, and salvage.

Our furniture is built with traditional and lasting methods, there is no 2 – 3 year replacements necessary and therefore and again (2), reducing waste. The customer not only receives a “new” piece that is well-built, functional, and beautiful, but one that is uniquely imbibed with an historical context – stories and experience alive in the wood protected and adored! Saving our past (3).

In building, we lower our collaborative footprint on the planet too (4). This is done with a philosophy of work that reduces demand on sustainable forestry – trees. Additionally for the planet, using and not dumping or burning salvaged wood, means the carbon stays trapped and the hard-won work trees have already accomplished for the world, is saved forward. Finally, because we use machines far less in the building process than say, conventional factory builds or joinery’s, a lower footprint is achieved in production as well.

In keeping with the above philosophies, it is natural we should also offer a comprehensive furniture repair service. It is as equal a privilege to work on nineteenth and twentieth century pieces as it is to work on mid-century and more modern components. The end purpose is the same – to repair a piece to full functionality and beauty so that it may continue its life in servitude and sharing whatever new stories may be a part of that. Whether that’s an important heirloom, a wonderful market find, or just a favourite piece. Call, text, or email with photos for a no obligation discussion with Johnny.
